Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel

3photo.jpg

This baby golden-mantled ground squirrel was caught by a dog near Hartley Springs.
With the dog hot on her heels, she made it to her nest where the dog caught up with her
and a sibling. The sibling was uninjured but the little female’s right front arm was
traumatically amputated from her body.

The rescuer dressed the wound, gave the two
survivors food and water, and let the uninjured one go “home.” An ESWC volunteer
picked up the squirrel the next morning, drove her part-way to Bishop, and handed her off to another volunteer who got her to the Center. She recovered well but is handicapped
when climbing or running.

“Early Girl” is slated to be one of our Wildlife Ambassadors.
